Winter Automobile Travel Safety Tips

Category: Safety & health

Winter automobile travel may bring people inconvenience and danger. The bad winter weather will affect the road condition and your drive.
For example, ice will make the road too slippery, and foggy weather will reduce the visibility. But if you make good preparation and take some effective measures, the risks can be minimized. Here are some tips to make your winter travel safer and more comfortable.

I. Preparations
Check the weather information before your travel. You may also check the road condition by calling the ministry of transportation. If the weather is extremely bad and does not suit for driving, you must change the travel time. After all, safety should always come first.

If the temperature is very low, you'd better wear some warm and comfortable cotton clothes which do not restrict your movement.

The cold winter weather will affect the performances of the battery, brakes, ignition system, tires, belt hoses, and radiator. In foggy or snowy weather, the visibility will be quite low. In this case, the lights become very important. So, have a maintenance check-up for your vehicle to make sure that every part is in good condition.

Tires are another important component to winter driving. You should know that all-season radial tires only suit light snowfall, while snow tires suit heavy snowfall. When you meet very heavy snow and icy road, you'd better use tire chains. But you must be aware that some regions do not permit the use of tire chains. Please also make sure that your tires are properly pumped, because tire pressure will drop around 1 psi when the temperature drops 5 degrees.

When your fuel level is low, refuel your vehicle. Usually, the distance between two gas stations is not short.

II. On the road
Turn on all your vehicle's lights when the visibility is very low. If it's still low, stop driving.

It takes longer time when you want to stop on a slippery road. In order to prevent collision, please pay attention to the stop distance. Leave relatively more room between your car and the vehicle ahead.

If you have taken the advanced driving course, I'm sure you know how to adjust your braking system in different weathers.

In heavy snowy weather, try to avoid driving beside large trucks. Large trucks may spray snow and mud onto your windshield, making you lose visibility for a while.

Try not to overtake, and if you have to, make sure it is safe. Please always drive at a reduced speed, for the sake of safety.

When you find yourself approaching a bridge, the best solution is to slow down. The bridge is usually icier even if there is no ice on it, especially those steel and concrete bridges.

III. Some other tips

When you get a skid, don't panic. You must be clear which direction you want to move. Never attempt to brake or accelerate, for that will make the situation even worse. Turn down the driving force.

If you are driving on a slippery road, it is very hard to brake. If the situation does not need you to stop immediately, you can adopt the threshold braking mode with manual shift.

Getting stuck or stranded in the snow is usual. If you can not get your car away from snow, just stay in the vehicle. Turn on all your lights in order to make your car more visible to others. If you get out of your vehicle, you must take measures to keep warm. Work slowly when shovelling, otherwise you will easily get sweat and catch a cold.
