Personal Safety Tips

Category: Safety & health

Most of the times when we are in danger or in trouble, the first thing coming into our mind is to call the police for help.

But there are times when the police can not reach us immediately. For example, if you are driving alone on a desert highway, no body can give you a hand in case of emergency. Then what should you do? The following are some safety tips for your reference.

I. When you go out alone

If possible, do not go out at night. If you have to, try to find a friend to walk with you, or just take a taxi. Don't take shortcuts along dark or gloomy places, like parks or wastelands. Walk in well-lit areas and always pay attention to your surroundings.

If you wear expensive jewelry, for the sake of safety, try to cover them up or just take them off when you are walking alone at night. Don't use your cell phone or take out your wallet. Don't take large amounts of cash with you. Never try to fight against those who want to rob your belongings, or you might lose both of your possession and your life.

If you feel that you are being followed, don't panic. Go to the nearest public place, like a supermarket or a club, but never think of going into the enclosed phone booth. When threatened, you can scream and then run as fast as possible.

Don't drink too much. If you feel that you are a little drunken, don't walk home by yourself.

When you take a taxi, sit behind the driver. If you book one, don't forget to check the taxi number when it arrives.

If possible, you can take a self-defense class. It will help you a lot.

If you need to take a bus at night, you'd better not wait at a bus stop without anyone else beside you. When you get on the bus, try to sit close to the driver and keep your handbags on your lap. Don't tell strangers your personal information.

If you live alone, before entering your house, you can dial the phone number of your home or press the doorbell in case someone is still in there. If you find that somebody might have intruded into your home, don't worry and don't enter either. The first thing you should do is to call the police.

II. When you drive alone

Check your vehicle and fuel it before you drive.

Check your vehicle, especially the floor and the back seats before going in. Make sure that you have your key in your hand.

After entering your car, make sure you have locked the doors and closed the windows.

Don't accept hitch-hikers or stop to help some motorists. You can help them by calling the police.

If you feel that you are followed by other vehicles, you can drive to a public place, or if there isn't any, you can make a call for help. You can also honk your horn. But do not stop or go out of your vehicle.

If you want to park and leave your car, be sure to pull out your key from the ignition. Make sure to park in some public areas.

Don't put valuables on the seat, because others may see them. You can put them on the floor or in some other safe places.

III. When you travel alone

Before setting off, you need to prepare a first aid kit, in case of some accidental injury or sickness.

Don't forget to bring your cell phone and phone charger. If you are in trouble you can make a call for help.

When traveling outside, you'd better buy bottled water to drink and even to wash your hands and face.

If you want to book a hotel, you must check the basic information. For example, you must make sure that your room has fire alarm and sprinkler system, the hotel has emergency intercom system, security guards are on duty everyday, all rooms have the dead bolts, and there is a phone in the bathroom. If you have a car, ask if the parking lots are guarded.
