What else do you need during your travel abroad besides passport and visa?
1. What is a vaccination certificate?
An International Certificate of Vaccination (ICV) is a certificate proving people not infected with yellow fever, cholera, rabies and other infectious diseases listed by WHO and it is required in certain countries upon your arrival. On the safe side, you are advised to update your tetanus measles, mumps, and rubella shots for a safe journey. You can get information on entry requirements from the embassy or consulate of the country you are visiting.
2. Why do you need a vaccination certificate?
Travelers should provide proof of vaccination at the entry of some countries, which is allowed by the International Health Regulations. A complete international certificate of vaccination is required otherwise the travelers might be quarantined or refused to enter those countries unless an onsite vaccination is submitted.
3. Two common vaccination certificates
ICV for yellow fever
Yellow fever is a viral disease only found in Africa and South America. It is spread to humans by the bites of infected mosquitoes. Most infections are mild, while the disease is still fatal in nearly 5% of the cases.
It is of great necessity for travelers to receive yellow fever vaccine. Mosquito bites are not easy to avoid, while vaccination provides the easiest and most cost-efficient prevention measure. It's a kind of live virus already used for several decades. Adults and children above 9 months can take it to get the immunity lasting 10 years. Moreover, in some backward and remote areas of Africa and South America, some new type of yellow fever can't be diagnosed owing to the undeveloped medical facilities. Without vaccination, the risk of yellow fever infection will be rather high under this circumstance. If people traveled without vaccination and became infected, they might bring the disease to their own country, a population susceptible to infection. This could result in an epidemic.
In order to prevent importation and indigenous transmission of yellow fever virus, many countries require vaccination certificates from travelers coming from endemic areas, even if the traveler is only in transit. Therefore the travelers should receive the yellow fever vaccination for their own safety's sake as well as for acquiring the International Certificate of Vaccination which is required for entry certain countries before they depart from their own country.
For those who can't receive the yellow fever vaccination for medical reasons, it's recommended to obtain a medical waiver before departure.
Rabies vaccination or certification
If you are going abroad with your dog, you have to pay attention to the vaccination requirements on your pet. Certain countries do require rabies vaccination certificates for the dogs which travelers bring during their trip.
Issued from a licensed veterinarian registered with the Animal Health Direction of MGAP, the Rabies Vaccination Certificate should include the registration number and a professional stamp (if the stamp is not provided by the veterinarian, people can buy it at bookstores), as well as the serial number, validity duration, type of the rabies vaccine used and the dog's color, weight, etc..
Another thing is that some countries require the dogs to have the vaccine at least 30 days before the entry. So you'd better make an early vaccination for your dog and receive a certificate from the veterinarian before your travel.
Do you need a vaccination certificate? You should already have your answer after reading this passage. Depending on the requirements of different countries, you may receive some or not. However, it is still recommended to receive certain proper vaccines for the sake of your own safety and your smooth journey.
