Tips for Women Traveling Alone

Category: Special Travel Needs

As more and more women choose to travel alone, safety and security become important issues.
Although their reasons for traveling are similar to male counterparts, solo women are more likely to encounter a variety of difficulties and potential danger. We offer you some useful tips to help make your trip safe and rewarding.

I. Before the trip
Make sure you have the required travel documents. Double check the validity of your passports, visas and other documents. Copy important documents, leave one to your family or reliable friend and pack one in your luggage in case any accident happens. Inform at least one trustworthy person of your traveling details including the itinerary, contact method, accommodation information and so on.

Learn as much as possible about the destination, especially when you are traveling abroad. Different countries have their own cultures and traditions, and an area's religious or cultural beliefs can have directly impact on your dress, manner, eating habit and more. For example, it is a custom for females in Islamic countries to wear a veil. In order to avoid cultural contradiction, it is always wise to get yourself familiar with regulations and customs of the traveling destination.

For those who take prescription drugs, especially for the mothers-to-be, it is important to bring enough medicine to last the length of your trip. It is also helpful to bring along the prescription information and the names of the generic equivalents in case of delays. Besides, many countries have strict laws against drug trafficking, so you'd better carry your prescriptions in their labeled containers.

Pack light. Don't bring useless jewelry, gold, designer clothes and other valuables that may attract thieves. Keep essentials in order and close to you. Lock all the suitcases and only use covered luggage tags with your office address rather than your home address written on it.

Prepare enough local currencies of your traveling destination to purchase souvenirs or other small items.

Buy all the necessary insurance before your trip, such as insurance for trip cancellation, interruption, sickness and more.

II. During the trip
Be alert of your surroundings. Study district map of your destination carefully. Rely on your common sense if possible. Act like a local citizen to avoid becoming the victim of the criminals. If necessary, you can ask the concierge about where to go, and more importantly, where not to go.

Figure out available transportation options at your destination in advance. At this moment, ask a travel agent for help because travel agents are expertise in this area. They can guide you to make proper arrangement.

Dress appropriately. Avoid wearing clothes that contradict local cultures and customs. Exaggerated wearing or excessive valuable decoration might lead to disastrous physical or indecent assault. Try to stay away from anything sexy.

Don't get too friendly to anyone. Turn down any offer of drink or food. You may bring a book and headphones with you to keep you company.

Shopping or entertaining yourself in safe places and avoid rush hours. Try your best not to go out at night. Old grandma's saying is always useful and reasonable.

Never reveal panicky expression when you don't know how to tackle difficulties. There is always a way out. If you sense potential danger, try to ask the nearest local police or authority for help.

III. At the hotel
Choose hotels where security is good, and get yourself familiarized with two kinds of hotel staff: those who provide services, and those who are in charge of monitoring job. Ask beforehand if a security guard is available to accompany you to your room in the event of late arrival at night.

While at the front desk, never forget to ask for a card with name, address and phone number of the hotel. Keep that card along with you at all times.

Avoid a room on a lower floor, or near emergency exits, stairwells, and any renovation work. Ask for a room on a higher floor near the elevator.

Once you get a room, check to make sure that all of the doors and windows have working locks. Also check the peephole of your door. If your room door does not have a peephole, make sure you don't open the door to strangers.

Do not leave money or other valuables in your room while you are away. Take them with you all the time.

If your room has a phone, check if it works. Otherwise, check your cell phone to make sure you can call for help if anything goes wrong.

IV. How to defense yourself
Take some portable protective devices with you such as defense spray, taser or personal alarm. Or you can sharpen your nails for defense.

If you think you are being followed, step into a store or another safe place and wait to see whether the person passes by.
If you feel like you are being followed by a car, change your route or direction immediately.

Don't dance to attacker's tune. When disturbed, you can tell people around. If you don't know the native language, you can scream or slap the attacker's face to catch others' attention because body language is a universal language.

Don't let your joyful journey become an incurable injury to your life. Please remember that a little prudence goes a long way. Preparation plus some extra caution will ensure your safety.
