Airports and train stations do have left luggage facilities, but most of them are operated by small companies.
You had better check out the reliability of the company before storing your luggage.

In Cairns International Airport, baggage storage is available at the terminal. You can contact Smarte Carte Australia Pty Ltd who can assist with your baggage storage needs. Their phone number is 0407 359 678, or you can send e-mail to chris@smartecarte.com. The storage costs are up to 3 hours $6 (small) or $8 (large) and over 3 hours $10 (small) or $14 (large).

Hotel is also a good place to hold your luggage. Take Cairns Central YHA for example. You can use the overnight luggage storage. It will cost $5 per person per night. Access to this room is strictly between 7:30am and 10pm daily. If you are leaving on a tour before 7:30am, you need to arrange overnight storage the night before. And the room is secure and locked.
