You must contact the airline to get the airline procedure for handling a lost luggage claim.

Then write emails and make phone calls repeatedly. If emails and phone calls are not answered within three days, you'd better write a letter to them.

The airline will want to know what was in the missing bag. You'd better prepare an accurate packing list beforehand. In case you don't have such a list, try to memorize some specific and important items in your lost luggage, as many as possible. Be honest on what you are claiming to avoid embarrassing situations. Do not forget to add the cost of your suitcase as well.

There is one thing passengers should pay attention to. Most airlines will try and persuade their customers to claim for any lost luggage through their own personal travel insurance. You are well within your rights to push the airline for direct compensation as under the Montreal Convention if an airline accepts any item as checked baggage it must accept liability for it.
