Understanding Travel Insurance

Category: Travel insurance

Is traveling a blessing or a curse? It is no doubt that travels can bring us both fun and misfortunes, since the unexpected could happen at any time, in anywhere, and to anyone.
What if we encounter the bad whether? What if we have to change our plan and go back earlier? What if we fall ill and meet medical emergencies? At this moment, travel insurance could save and protect your travel investment. That is why travel insurance comes into being.

Generally speaking, travel insurance is a limited-time insurance which is designed to protect our health, belongings, financial investment, etc. and cover against the possible risks we may encounter throughout our trips. It usually costs between 5% and 7% of the cost of the trip and can be purchased via travel agents, online insurance comparison sites or directly through insurance carriers.

When purchasing travel insurance, you will need to start from the two basic types of travel insurance: single trip insurance and annual travel insurance.

Single trip insurance provides coverage only for a specific trip or holiday you intend to travel. It can be further divided into short stay and long stay insurances. The former offers a maximum duration of three or four months according to the insurance provider, while the later has a duration of three to eighteen months, ideal for travelers who take a long holiday.

Annual travel insurance, also called multi-trip insurance, covers all the trips you make in twelve months, but you'll be required to limit the length of every trip within three weeks to a hundred days. It's the most convenient and economical insurance for those constant travelers who take at least three trips a year.

With different coverage and limitations, travel insurance can take on an assortment of forms. The following are three basic types of coverage for average travelers:

Trip protection

The most common and important type of travel insurance is Trip Cancellation, which will cover all the non-refundable payments or deposits in case of any cancelled trip caused by any unforeseen circumstances.

Trip Delay is fairly helpful if we meet any break in travel plan.

Trip Interruption is a kind of travel insurance that will reimburse our money if our trip gets interrupted due to any unexpected calamity.

Property protection

Baggage/Personal Effects Loss or Delay is also a common type of insurance which will cover losses of lost or delayed baggage, or any damaged stuff.

Travel Document Loss will save us from situations such as a stolen or lost passport.

Medical/ life coverage

Accident/Sickness Medical Expenses will cover your medical expenses if you get injured in accidents or fall ill anywhere during travel.

Medical Evacuation/Emergency Transportation will cover expenses such as the transportation charge to the hospital in case of a medical emergency during travel.

Life Insurance cover accidental death resulted from flight accident and other death related occurrence.
