Disturbed by the news reports on the recent hijacks or airline incidents? Anxious about the forthcoming flight?

Well, relax. Traveling by air is still the safest way of all the transportation means. This elaborate travel guide tries to explain airline safety issues and other matters of concern on the improvement of aviation safety.

I. Are airplanes safe?

Worrying too much about airline safety problem will merely add anxiety. Statistics show that airline transportation is still one of the safest ways in all means of transportation. A study by the U.S. National Safety Council showed that in the U.S., flying in a commercial jet is 22 times safer than traveling by car. In 2000, the world's airlines operate approximately 22 million flights with only 20 fatal accidents. The chance of being involved in an aircraft accident is about 1 in 1,000, 000. That is to say, you do have to risk for a flight, but the risk is within a bearable limit. Commercial aviation crashes (including Scheduled Services and Non-scheduled Services) in 2006 suffer only 27 fatal accidents with 863 fatalities. While in 2007, figures for accidents show 23 fatal accidents. In particular, the U.S. airline had no major accidents or fatalities in 2007.Comparing the number of the fatal accidents happened worldwide in 2006 and 2007; we can expect a reduction in 2008.

II. What's the frequency of serious airline accidents?

Serious incidents are extremely rare. It is estimated that the rate of severe fatal airline accidents today is about 1 in 1,000,000. To put it more explicitly, a passenger would have to fly once everyday for over 2700 years before he would be involved in a fatal accident! In spite of this, the manufacturers, the airline groups, the government and the regulatory authorities are still working together to make flying safer.

III. What caused the airline accidents?

In most case, there are multiple factors that lead to an airplane crash, including flight screw, operating procedure, maintenance, air traffic control and bad weather. According to relevant data, human factors are the main reason, which account for more than 70% of all commercial airline accidents. Safety professionals said that new safety equipment has been installed by the aviation community to monitor flights more closely and detect early warnings of safety problems.

IV. What can passengers do to ensure safety?

1. Listen to the flight attendants and pay attention to the video screen presentation.

2. Listen to safety briefings and review the safety data card in the seat pocket.

3. Familiarize yourself with the aircraft. Locate the emergency exits.

4. Fasten your seat belt.

5. Choose nonstop routings to fly on if possible.

6. Choose larger aircrafts.

7. Don't bring any hazardous material.

V. Which are the relatively safer airlines in America?
