Pan-American Highway is the network of highways connecting North America and South America.
I. Introduction to Pan-American Highway
The whole length of this highway is about 25,750 km (16,000 miles) long and thus considered as the world's longest highway to connect North America and South America. Pan-American Highway covers Canada, USA, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina. It stretches from Cuauhtoc on the Mexican-Guatemalan border to Chepo in the foothills of Dari, covering the entire length of the isthmus.
Connecting many countries in the Western Hemisphere, it was originally designed as a single route instead of the Network of highways. The PAH has been put into effect since middle 1960s.
II. Learn more about the PAH
1. The most famous section of the Pan-American Highway
It is said that the Inter-American Highway, which contains the route from the United States and the Panama Canal, is the most famous section of the Pan-American Highway.
Darien Gap in Panama, known as the laboratory of bio-diversity, has unspoiled rainforest and wildlife. The eastern Panama next to Colombia is an undeveloped state with scattered population. Its original jungles and morasses are one of the best places for your adventure trip. There is still more waiting for you to explore.
When visiting this area, you will enter a world with different climates and ecology.
2. The historical scenes along the Pan-American Highway
Driving on the Pan-American Highway, you can have the opportunity to rediscover the past history, like the civilizations of Mayan, and the amazing scenery of Mexico and Central America.
Maya has a very brilliant past, especially famous for some achievements. For example they have invented the most accurate calendar, introduced the concept of zero in math, and devised rubberized rain clothes. Mayan Ruins has amazed the whole world, and is attracting tourists from all over the planet.
The most popular ancient stone buildings are in southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Everyday a large number of people from different countries come to visit them.
III. Tips for the PAH travel
1. Since there are many famous ancient cities and some other unique scenery along the Pan-American Highway, it is very necessary for you to buy a guide book or map so that you can have a good plan before departure.
2. You should know that the road condition of the Pan-American Highway is not always the same. What's more, different weather and time may also influence your driving standards. Pack necessary items according to the whether of your destination and make full preparation for the sudden change of road or weather.
3. Have a general plan of your traveling. The Pan-American Highway is too long to visit all at once. You should plan where to visit and have a general idea about laws and regulations of destination.
4. In order to choose the best route, it is necessary to have a careful research on the Pan-American Highway. The following are our suggestions:
A. Choose the right vehicle for your road driving. For example, big truck is not suitable to drive in South America because of the narrow road, and regular passenger bus is not allowed on off major highways.
B. Be careful about wild animals on the road in Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, etc. because animals may walk or appear suddenly on the way of those places.
C. You should get clearance from all applicable countries because of cross-national driving. But in Central America, you only need temporary vehicle permit for border-crossing. In Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Bolivia, and some other places, you should by national car insurance.
D. Some places are not accessible by car such as Darien Gap. You should choose suitable ferry to ship your car according to your affordability and boat security system.
6. Bring dollars for your purchase because dollar is accepted by almost all the countries in the world, let alone in America.
7. Food is always very expensive on the road. You'd better bring some food yourself if you want to save money.
Pan-American Highway is one of the most famous resorts through America. It is the ideal choice if you want to view unspoiled natural beauty, visit national parks, enjoy motor riding or adventure in rainforest and wildness.
