Airline Carry on Luggage Regulations and Policies

I. Regulations on Maximum Dimensions

We have collected the maximum dimensions of permitted luggage in the Top 8 American airlines.

Different airlines have various standards and regulations. Make sure your luggage fits the policy when you are traveling with the following airlines.

1. American Airlines allows 2 pieces of luggage that can be placed under seat or overhead, each of them should be restricted within 23 x 13 x 9 (45-55 linear inches).

2. America West allows 2 pieces of luggage, but they require 45 linear inches total for both pieces.

3. Continental Airline allows 2 pieces of luggage, and 45 linear inches total for both pieces.

4. Delta allows its passengers to take 2 pieces of luggage, but restricted within 45 linear inches total for both pieces.

5. Northwest Airlines allows only one piece of luggage and the restriction is 22 x 14 x 9 for single one piece.

6. TWA allows its passengers to take 2 pieces of luggage that can be placed under seats, with the maximum dimensions of 22 x 14 x 950 linear inches.

7. United Airlines allows its passengers to take 2 pieces of luggage that can be placed under seats, with the maximum dimensions of 45 linear inches.

8. US Airways allows its passengers to take 2 pieces of luggage that can be placed overhead in maximum dimensions of 24 x 16 x 10, valets in maximum dimensions of 45 x 23 x 4, or under seat in maximum dimensions of 24 x 16 x 8.

II. Regulations on luggage content

There are certain permitted and prohibited items in the airline. Please check the following list to make sure your items are permitted.

1. Knives

Knives or cutting instruments of any size or material in carry-on luggage are not accepted. However, you are allowed to keep such things in checked luggage as sabers, swords, hunting knives, souvenir knives, and martial arts devices with blades. Additionally, scissors, razor blades, corkscrews manicure sets, sewing scissors and similar items are acceptable in checked luggage. The following knives are prohibited in carry-on Luggage (in alphabetic order):
Box Cutters;
Ice Axes/Ice Picks;
Knives - except for plastic or round bladed butter knives
Meat Cleavers
Razor-Type Blades - such as box cutters, utility knives, razor blades not in a cartridge, but excluding safety razors.
Sabers
Scissors - metal with pointed tips and blades longer than four inches
Swords

2. Guns & Firearms

Guns and firearms of any kind are not accepted in carry-on luggage. However, they are accepted in checked luggage with certain limitations. The following guns and firearms are prohibited in carry-on luggage (in alphabetic order):

Ammunition
BB guns
Compressed Air Guns
Fire Arms
Flare Guns
Flares
Gun Lighters
Gun Powder including black powder and percussion caps
Parts of Guns and Firearms
Pellet Guns
Realistic Replicas of Firearms
Starter Pistols

3. Liquid:

According to the permission for carry-on liquids and gels announced by the United States Transportation Security Administration, airline passengers are allowed to carry small amounts of liquids and gels in their carry-on luggage. But they have to make sure that each of the bottles contains less than 3 oz (100ml) of liquid, and all the bottles are placed in a 1 quart sized zip top transparent plastic bag. Such bag will be handed to be inspected. But please notice that each traveler is allowed only one such bag.

The following liquids are strictly restricted to less than 3 oz in carry-on luggage (in alphabetic order):
Lip gels such as Carmex or Blistex
Liquid lip glosses or other liquids for lips
Liquid bubble bath including gel or liquid filled
Liquid foundations
Liquid, gel or spray perfumes and colognes
Liquid sanitizers
Liquid soaps
Liquid mascara
Make up removers or facial cleansers
Mouthwash
Nail Clippers
Nail Files
Nail polish and removers

Besides, the United States Transportation Security Administration has reported a list of countries that are currently harmonized with this regulation for carrying liquids through the checkpoint. Please check the following list and make sure your target country is listed, or else, you'd better not travel with liquid.

These country include: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, China, Cook Islands, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, French Polynesia, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Marshall Islands, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico, Micronesia, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

4. Medication

You can carry medication with you in the air, but you have to prepare a photocopy of your prescription to prove you really need the medication.
