Tips on Duty-free Limits for Visitors to Canada

Clearing customs is an inevitable procedure when arriving in a country. Most countries have two channels: the green channel and the red channel.

However, some countries, like India, have three channels: the white channel, the green channel and the red channel.

If loaded with more than duty-free allowances or with prohibited goods, you will be requested to go through the red channel and declare your articles to a customs officer. Alternatively, you can enter the green channel and generally needn't declare if aren't stopped by an officer.

Most people going abroad will buy gifts for friends and family members or for themselves as souvenirs. If the amount of items is reasonable, everything goes well. Otherwise, things will be different. And you'll be obliged to declare these gifts annoyingly and troublesomely to the customs officers. So it is necessary to get some tips on duty-free limits when returning from abroad. Here our guide can help you out by taking Canada customs as an example.

Generally speaking, a reasonable amount of personal effects and food, together with a full tank of gas are accepted by Canada Customs. However, special goods like plant, agricultural and animal-related materials that may spread diseases are under special restrictions.

If you intend to buy gifts for your friends in Canada, you'd better know the rules. Duty-free gifts, worth up to Canadian $60 each, must be free from alcohol, tobacco, or advertising material.

For alcohol products, Canada customs has strict regulations. There are four choices and you can only choose one of them listed below. 1.5 liters (53 ounces) of wine, 1.14 liters (40 ounces) of liquor, a total of 1.14 liters (40 ounces) of liquor or wine, or24 x 355ml (12 ounces) cans/bottles of beer, ale, or their equivalent.

However, you can import more, provided you are voluntary to pay extra fees and taxes as well as the duties that apply.

With regard to tobacco, travelers can take 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars/cigarillos, 200 grams (7 ounces) of manufactured tobacco, and 200 tobacco sticks. All of the articles are permitted to be imported and are both duty-free and tax-free.
