Tips for Picking a Canvas Daypack

Category: Daypacks Buying Guides

Make your day with a well-built daypack! Unprecedented ease and convenience are waiting for you.
A terrific daypack is a must-have for almost all the activities, including hiking, cycling, skiing, climbing, fishing, shopping and a lot more.

Canvas is said to be one of the most useful and popular materials for constructing quality daypacks. And there are manufacturer specified canvas fabrics such as Macpac's AzTec®. Canvas daypacks are lighter than leather ones, and a lot cheaper of course. Canvas is also more water-resistant than nylon, although slightly heavier. Canvas daypacks are durable, reliable, and easy to care. And many canvas bags have nylon patches sewn over the heavy wear areas for enhanced abrasion resistance. Here are some tips on choosing a splendid canvas daypack:

Style and Size
In general, daypacks come in two styles: front or zip loading vs. top loading. A panel-loading style pack's main storage compartment has a long, U-shaped zipper. This wide opening makes it convenient to access items such as clothing or books, which may be not easy to locate in a top loading pack.

While, top loaders usually do a better job of keeping gear from shifting, especially when designed with compression straps. For activities requiring a greater degree of waterproofness, top-loading models also perform well, since zippers on panel-loading packs tend to allow seepage even if covered by a flap. And a top loading daypack will be more suitable for activities where balance is vital (climbing, ski touring, walking).

Today, the market is filled with a wide selection of daypack size options. You can choose an ideal fit for your own style of outdoor adventuring. Before picking up a daypack, you should make sure the strap location, torso length and belt location are right for your body size. Women's body shapes and torso lengths are different from men's, so many pack companies have designed products better fitting women customers.

Capacity and Comfort
Remember daypacks are designed for short, low-capacity activities such as day walks, skiing, cycling etc. Most daypacks hold 15 to 35 liters. We suggest you don't exceed a load of 12 kilos, because if there is no hipbelt or back padding, the weight will entirely fall on your shoulders, which can be very tiring and painful. So, when you are shopping for a canvas daypack, you may need to ask the following questions to make sure it is comfortable to use:
Is there a waist strap for stability?
Can the weight be transferred to your hips to relieve shoulder pressure?
Do the straps and belts have adequate adjustment and padding?
Is there padding along the back for comfort?
Are the straps and back panels mesh-lined to aid ventilation?

Organization and Hydration
Most of today's canvas daypacks come with lots of separate compartments and pockets, many of which are designed to accommodate specific items for hiking or urban activities. When comparing different daypacks, you should check how the pockets are organized. You may need a large main compartment, securing extra clothing or a laptop in place. And you may also need lots of individual pockets, keeping your digital gear-a cell phone, two-way radio or GPS unit well-organized.

Daypack hydration is another important feature, especially for outdoor activities. In today's market, some packs have integrated hydration systems for on-board water, including the bladder and tube, but most canvas daypacks provide space and port holes without the required reservoir and tubing. For those who don't want the hassle of cleaning and storing a water bladder, an external mesh pocket for water bottles is a fantastic choice. So you'll need to ask questions like:
Which hydration system you prefer, built-in bladder or external mesh pockets?
Is there enough space to bring the water you'll need?
Can you reach the water bottles without removing the pack?

Zippers
When shopping for a quality daypack that lasts for years, sturdy zippers are also among the key features to consider. If the bag has an inappropriate zipper, it will be more difficult to open and close. The wrong zipper will also catch delicate clothing in its teeth, or drastically shorten the usable lifespan of a pack.

Zippers come in a variety of sizes, and larger model numbers generally indicate beefier zips.
There is a weight trade-off with smaller gauge zippers, but you should always avoid ones with extremely fine teeth or plastic pulls that get brittle in the cold. The general principle for choosing quality zippers is to try them out several times to make sure they are durable, lightweight, and lockable (even fireproof) if needed. YKK is a trustworthy brand for durable and dependable zippers, and YKK coiled zippers are preferred for backpack use.
