Upright Duffle Bags Buying Guide

Category: Uprights Buying Guides

Upright duffle bags are lightweight, soft-sided and easy-to-pack bags with no internal frame structure.
They are designed to stand on one end, so it is fairly easy to grab the handles and pull the bag.

Today, upright duffle bags come with retractable handles and wheels, making it a lot easier to trek through busy airports or get to and from your car. Besides, these bags are available in many sizes, from smaller carry-on to larger hold luggage sizes. Having the right upright duffle can make a successful trip, whether it's for business or pleasure. You need a bag made of the right material with the right size and weight, and at the same time offering good protection and convenience. And the following is a guide to help you choose your next upright duffle bag.

Size and Weight
Before you buy any luggage, it is always necessary to think about what you pack on most of your travels. Will you be enjoying long vacations that require more supplies, or will you be on overnight stays that only require a change of clothes? For an extended getaway, consider a large wheeled duffle, say, a 28" or 30" model. These large duffles usually have a huge main compartment with U-shaped opening for easy packing and unpacking. For overnight stays, a smaller carry-on duffle will do just fine.

Most upright duffle bags are lightweight, and even larger models only weigh about 10 lbs. But if your bag always ends up exceeding the carry-on luggage weight limit, you should consider getting a super light duffle at about 6 lbs.

Wheels and Handles
Wheels can make the trip much easier. But if they break, you'll have to haul the heavy bag around yourself. So make sure your upright duffle comes with rigid, high-quality wheels. Always opt for wheels with corner protection. Wide wheels are better, because they roll smoothly. And choose wheels that are spaced far apart, in order to ensure stability and reduce tipping. If possible, check the wheels in person and make sure that they are tightly attached to the base of the bag and can smoothly roll across the floor.

Most upright duffle bags are equipped with recessed handles, which are less likely to break or incur any other sort of damage. Grip handles on top and side should be padded and wide for more comfort and durability.

Materials and Details
The most popular material for making upright duffles is nylon. There are two types of nylon: ballistic nylon and cordura nylon. Of the two, ballistic is better, but also more expensive. The durability of nylon is measured in denier, and the higher the better - higher denier suggests the fabric is strong, durable and less likely to rip or tear. Another popular material is Vinyl, which is pretty durable and moderately priced. Its main advantage is that it is very easy to clean.

Once you have decided on the material of the luggage, don't forget about the details that decide its quality. You should always examine the zippers and seams. These details determine how long your bag will last - cheap zippers will quickly break and weak seams will soon tear. Plus, water-proof coating will be a nice feature if you want the bag to protect your belongings from rain or splashed water.

Price
Above are the things to consider when buying an upright duffle bag. Finally, don't forget your budget. Luggage prices vary, and what kind of duffle you need depends on your travel type. If you're an infrequent traveler, a small, lesser-quality duffle bag can be yours for under $100. Otherwise, if you're a road warrior who spends more time away from home than in it, you may need to spend up to $500 for a quality bag that won't wear out before you do.
