Carry-On Suit Garment Bags Buyers Guide

If you are traveling by air and need to take a tuxedo or several fancy dresses for some special occasions, you cannot do without a garment bag.
The basic idea of a carry-on suit garment bag is a portable "closet" holding two to four garments on hangers and keeping them wrinkle free on the road.

With ever-tightening airline restrictions, it's important to know the weight and dimension limits of carry-on luggage before you even begin packing. Garment bags come with different lengths, ranging from 22" folded, to 40" or 54"; some even expand to 60" for evening clothes. Remember smaller bags may qualify as carry-on luggage, while bigger ones may not. So it is necessary to consult the airline for the luggage regulations to make sure the carry-on garment bag you choose is light and small enough to fit the airline carry on requirements.

Most modern garment bags have wheels in the base, so you can roll your bags instead of carrying them. Without the wheels and hardware, non-rolling styles tend to be a little lighter and they are usually bi-fold or tri-fold to fit under the airline seat or in the overhead storage bin.

If you prefer a rolling garment bag, you'll enjoy the convenience of carrying and managing it on a trip. When choosing a wheeled garment case, it is necessary to check the quality of the wheels and handles. Wheels should be made of strong materials and be set far apart at the base of the bag to ensure stability. And the recessed handle systems should have single-handed push button release for easy use. Plus, the handle should be long enough so you can hold it in its expanded state without having to slouch or crouch while pulling the bag.

If you prefer a non-rolling style, you should look for a removable, contoured and padded shoulder strap. Because shoulder straps are usually mounted at the bag's stress points, it is necessary to have strong hardware and reinforced mounting areas to protect them from tearing off or snapping out. Zipper is another important consideration in non-rolling garment bags. Look for large teeth zippers made of durable nylon or mental to ensure smooth open and closure.

Carry-on garment bags are available in a wide range of materials and colors, and some have extra pouches or zippered pockets for shoes and other accessories.
