After purchasing a laptop, the very next thing you get might be a bag to put it in.
This may sound pretty easy - you will probably go to a store and pick up the first laptop bag that catches your eye. But in fact, choosing an ideal laptop case is way more complicated. As much consideration as buying the computer itself is needed.

The foremost consideration, of course, is to choose a laptop case with the right size for your computer. If the bag is too small, your laptop may not fit in. Even if your notebook does manage to squeeze in, taking it out will not that easy. If the bag is too big, your valuable, fragile gear won't get adequate protection - it will get damaged easily.

There are bags designed for laptops with 12" screens, 15" or 15.4" screens as well as 17" screens. Whether you're shopping online or in a store, knowing your laptop's screen size is the first thing to begin with. The screen size is the diagonal dimension of the screen (not the whole laptop). So different manufacturers may have different sized laptops that have the same size screen. The best way to get a right laptop case is to measure the length, width and height of your laptop, and then compare these three measurements to the laptop compartment of the case.
If possible, take your laptop to the store and try on the bag to get the best fit.

When it comes to the size of the laptop bag, your laptop is not the only decisive factor - you also need to consider all your accessories. If you only need to take some extra CD-ROMs or other small items, an outside pocket will do the job just fine. If you have lots of peripherals, such as a power adaptor, backup battery, external hard drive and more, try to purchase a laptop carrying bag that has plenty of compartments for them all. The more accessories you'll carry around, the bigger your laptop case needs to be.
