1. What type do you prefer?
External-frame packs, internal-frame packs and day packs/rucksacks are the three typical camping bags much admired by most travelers and outdoor lovers.
2. What size do you like?
The size of a camping backpack matters a lot. The bigger your pack is, the more it can hold. Meanwhile, getting a bigger backpack means you have to sacrifice mobility for load capacity, because the larger your pack is, the more efforts are needed. Here are some guidelines for the pack capacity of different activities.
| Different Activities | Suggested Capacity (cubic inches) |
| Hikes in warm seasons | 2,500-3,500 |
| Two or three-day excursions | 3,000-4,500 |
| Trips up to a week long | 4,500-6,000 |
| Winter camping or long expeditions | at least 6,000 |
3. Which material meets your specific needs?
To better protect your gear, the material of camping backpacks must be durable enough against wear and tear with the capability of water-resistance. Before paying the bill, you can check the product tag to get an idea of the material. Generally speaking, cordura nylon, ballistics nylon, ripstop nylon, and nylon packcloth are highly recommended.
4. What else should you look for?
Hip belts and straps are used to distribute the weight evenly. When the load is too heavy, hip belt is a must to ease the stress on the body. Make sure you choose the hip belts suitable for your hip. Try the bag and see if the hip belt can be locked properly, and pockets like detachable pockets and hydration pocket should be included for ease of use too.
Choosing a backpack is more or less like buying a piece of shirt. The pack should be nice-looking and unique to reveal your personality and taste. Some people prefer a dark color because it looks still new when it gets dirty. However, bright colors are always eye-catching and carrying a pack in red, yellow and alike will make you stand out immediately.
