Modern bicycle messenger bags originated from the utility lineman's bags in 1950s.
Globe Canvas began to manufacture heavy-duty canvas shoulder bags for telephone linemen, allowing the linemen to carry necessary tools and supplies within easy reach when they were suspended on telephone poles. Later New York bicycle messengers began to use this type of bag, and they used the bicycle messenger bags in different colors to identify their companies.
In response to the growing needs for messenger bags from bicycle messengers and consumers, some small manufacturers dabbled in bike messenger bag production in the 1980s, like Manhattan Portage from New York, Courierware from Boston, Zo Bags and Timbuk2 from San Francisco.
