The History of Trunk & Suitcase

Category: Trunks Buying Guides

Trunk, a.k.a traveling chest or 'donkey box', was the very first 'real' luggage for man to hold clothes, tools, and other personal belongings.
They were widely used by salesmen, tradesmen, bankers, doctors and immigrant travelers from the late 18th century to the early 20th. High-quality printed catalogs, advertising pieces to the new mail-order business, was quite popular in the 1890s.

Various woods such as Cedar, Oak, and Pine were used to construct trunks. Many trunk makers from the 1600's covered trunks with hides such as deer, horse or cowhide. Later coverings include paper, canvas, plain or embossed tin. Currently, and in the past, trunk makers have uniquely designed several shapes and sizes of trunks.

Brass ornaments such as tacks, nails, and locks were used in the 1700's to decorate the trunks as well as to differentiate the uniqueness of the trunk maker. Trunks were made for the circus, travelers, salesmen, storage (as they were easy to stack up), and many other purposes.

Suitcase was used to supplant the craftsmanship trunk in the market. It is cheaper and lighter, a somewhat flat rectangular-shaped bag with rounded corners, either plastic or made of cloth, vinyl or leather that can more or less keep its shape.

Modern suitcases have built-in wheels for a much easier maneuverability: two in-line wheels for straight drag-around, or four multi-directional wheels that can spin. Telescopic handles, locks, and id tags are also added for handling, transfer and security.
