Can I take a musical instrument on board to avoid damage?

Generally speaking, small musical instruments can be carried on board if they meet carry-on size requirements and fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
Over-sized musical instruments can only be carried on-board the cabin if you purchase an extra seat to accommodate it. The following regulations are for passengers traveling by Singapore Airlines or American Airlines.

Singapore Airlines
If your instrument is too large to fit in the carry-on baggage space, you can only book the seat for the instruments in the Economy Class and you must also travel in the same class. Large musical items (e.g. Cello, Guitars) must be placed on the floor and be properly secured by seats belts to the seat frame.
The Maximum Weight & Dimension:
Weight: 75 kg
Dimension: Height - 61"
idth: 19" (Based on armrest to armrest seat width)
Guitars are normally less than 7kgs (within the cabin weight allowance), but it may be considered as over-sized due to its dimensions and may not be allowed in the cabin if no extra seats have been purchased for it. And you should keep in mind that a Double Bass is not allowed on board as it exceeds the height limit set above.

American Airlines
Dimensions of a small musical instrument case should not exceed 45 linear inches, except for guitars which may be brought on board only if they can be safely stowed in an overhead bin or approved stowage location in the cabin. If your musical instrument is very large and can't fit in the carry-on baggage space, you should purchase an additional seat. In this case, an instrument must travel in a window, bulkhead seat, with the passenger in the adjoining seat. Due to its size Bass Fiddle is not accepted in the cabin.
