May I take my wheelchair on board?

Category: Carry-on luggage requirements

If you prefer to use you own wheelchair, you should keep in mind that cabin storage space is limited and does vary by aircraft type.
Usually, a collapsible wheelchair can be stored in the aircraft cabin. For United Airlines or Air New Zealand's passengers, the following information may be helpful.

United Airlines
If you use United's wheelchair service, it will provide an attendant at no charge to assist you in moving through the airport. If you prefer to use you own wheelchair, United will check your personal wheelchair free of charge along with luggage.

When you arrive at the gate be sure to tell the gate agent about your wheelchair. The agent can advise you about stowage options for your flight and ensure that the proper tag is placed on your wheelchair. United's baggage personnel need the tag so they know to bring you the wheelchair to the arrival gate when you are departing the terminal, or to bring it within the terminal during layovers between flights.

Air New Zealand
If you choose, your wheelchair may be checked-in and you will be provided with an airport wheelchair and assisted by staff to get to your aircraft seat.
Where an air-bridge is available, you may remain in your own wheelchair until you reach the door of the aircraft. A green handling tag will be affixed to the chair (in New Zealand).

Your personal wheelchair and shower chair will be carried in the cargo compartment at no extra charge but must be labeled with your name and address. For sports or other wheelchairs, excess baggage charges may apply if your checked-in baggage exceeds the free allowance either by weight or by the number of pieces permitted.
