Dangerous & Forbidden Items for Travellers Hong Kong

Regardless of where you are going, you should make sure what you are allowed to take. Check with your airline or travel agent for restrictions on the prohibited items when packing your luggage.

For the sake of security, some items should no longer be allowed on commercial aircraft in Hong Kong. Here is a list of the forbidden items:

1. Firearms, guns and weapons - any object capable, or appearing capable, of discharging a projectile or causing injury.

2. Pointed or edged weapons and sharp objects - any pointed or bladed item capable of being used to cause injury.

3. Blunt instruments - any blunt object capable of being used to cause injury.

4. Explosive and flammable substances - any explosive or highly combustible substances which pose a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the safety of aircraft or property.

5. Chemical and toxic substances - any chemical or toxic substances which pose a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the security/safety of aircraft or property.

The following dangerous items must not be carried in passenger's baggage either (neither checked nor unchecked luggage):

1. Attache briefcases with installed alarm devices; or incorporate lithium batteries and/or pyrotechnic material;

2. Explosives, munitions, fireworks and flares;

3. Compressed gases (flammable, non-flammable or poisonous) such as butane, propane, aqualung cylinders, lighter fuels or refills, aerosols;

4. Flammable liquids such as paints, thinner, adhesives;

5. Flammable solids such as "strike anywhere matches" and articles which are easily ignited;

6. Oxidizing substances such as bleaching powder and peroxides;

7. Poisons such as arsenic, cyanides, insecticides, weedkillers;

8. Radioactive materials;

9. Corrosive materials such as mercury (which may be contained in thermometers or blood pressure gauges), acids, alkalis and wet cell batteries;

10. Any other substances which, during a flight, present a danger not covered above, such as magnetized, offensive or irritating materials.

Some airlines allow passengers to carry their liquids, gels, or aerosols which are necessary for your journey, such as hair sprays, perfumes and medicines containing alcohol in limited quantities. Further information is available on request:
