Information on Getting Compensation for Your Lost Luggage

Category: Airline & Luggage By Countries

The European Commission estimates that more than five million pieces of luggage were lost or damaged annually by European airlines.
Under the convention, checked luggage is considered "lost" if it has not arrived 21 days after its scheduled date of arrival.

Irish airlines are making effort to avoid luggage from getting lost, but it still happens at whiles. If unluckily the airline loses your luggage, you should know how to exercise your rights to obtain compensation.

Report Your Lost Luggage
If your luggage is lost, firstly you should report the problem to the airline at the airport baggage hall immediately.

The airline will ask you to make out a Property Irregularity Report before leaving the baggage hall and you should keep your boarding cards and luggage reference numbers.

Secondly, you must make a separate written claim to the airline. And you had better provide as much information as possible about the contents and the costs.

Thirdly, if the lost luggage causes you to buy new items, keep all the receipts and attach the copies of the receipts to your complaint letter.

Liability Limitations
Under the Montreal Convention, you are entitled to claim a maximum of 1,000 SDRs (approximate ?1,200) for checked baggage unless you made a special declaration and paid a supplementary fee at check-in.

Liability could be reduced if baggage was presented for check-in unsuitably packed or after the recommended check-in time.

Ryanair does not take any responsibility for personal items misplaced of lost on board or in the airport terminals.

Any items located on board will be dispatched directly to the lost property offices at the destination airport.

For Aer Lingus' passengers, the airline allows ?60.00/$75 USD per 24-hour period up to a maximum of 3 days and ?180.00/$225 to non-residents towards the cost of essential interim purchases on the presentation of relevant receipts.
