An Overview of Korean Aviation History

Category: Airline & Luggage By Countries

The history of Korean aviation can be traced back to 1948 when Korea National Airlines (KNA), the first air carrier in Korea was established. It was a privately owned regional carrier which went into bankruptcy in 1962.
And KNA was replaced by the government-run Korean Air Lines, later known as Korean Air.

Since its privatization in 1969, Korean Air has been making significant progress in passenger and cargo transportation services. Now Korean Air has become South Korea's leading airline. It is the largest airline in Korea and one of the largest in Asia. Korean Air network is spreading over Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. Korean Air flies to about 115 cities in 38 countries worldwide.

In 1988, Korean No. 2 flag carrier, Asiana Airlines was established. The airline is a division of the Kumho Asiana Group. Asiana Airlines transports passengers and cargo to 90 destinations around the world. It operates a fleet of about 65 jets, including 17 freighters. With the youngest fleet in the world and as the first airline in the world, Asiana obtained the ISO 9002 Quality Certificate in 1994.

In 2004, the first regional low-cost carrier - Hansung Airlines was established and began low-cost scheduled domestic and charter services in August 2005. The cheap price won Hansung Airlines roaring popularity.
The success was followed by another low-cost airline, Jeju Air. Jeju Air was founded in January 2005 and started operations on 5 June 2006. In 2008, Jeju Air launched it's first international flight - Jeju to Hiroshima. In 2007, Yeongnam Air was established as another low-cost, high service airline. There is still one company deserving mention here, Yeongnam Air which offered low-cost, high service from 2007.

The good news is, with the appearance of new contenders in Korea, travelers are likely to enjoy better airline services whist paying less fare.
