Intro to Airline Companies in Japan

Category: Airline & Luggage By Countries

The Japanese Airline Companies play a very essential role in the world transport, so that it is really necessary for travelers to have a deeper understanding of some important Airline Companies in Japan, especially JAL and ANA.

Japan Airline Companies
Since the earliest airline company in Japan - Japan Airlines (JAL for short), was established in 1951, there have been 27 Airline Companies in Japan. They are developing rapidly and providing ultimate services for their customers.

JAL
JAL entered the airline business in 1951. It is one of the largest airlines in Asia, which operates scheduled and non-scheduled international and domestic routes.

It devotes every effort to providing fast and reliable service throughout Asia and the world. The slogan of Japan Airline is 'Our ultimate reward - Our customer's smile'.

After its establishment, JAL began to serve several domestic cities from Tokyo. On February 2, 1954, it started its first international service, from Tokyo to San Francisco. In 1972, JAL was granted flag carrier status to operate international routes and also appointed to operate domestic trunk routes in competition with All Nippon Airways. In 1980s, it bought Boeing 767and retired the DC-8s and 727s. In 2001, Japan Air System and Japan Airlines agreed to merge. JAL joined Oneworld (the world's third largest airline alliance) on April 1, 2007. It is also accredited with IATA's Operational Safety Audit for its safety practices. Today, JAL continues to maintain that standard with more than 16,000 Japan Airlines employees and 287 Japan Airlines aircraft. Japan Airlines serves 172 destinations in 30 countries, throughout Asia, America, Europe and Oceania.

ANA
All Nippon Airways, also known as ANA, is the country's second-largest international airline after JAL and the country's largest domestic airline. It's the main competitor of JAL. ANA was founded on 27 December, 1952. It grew steadily through the 1960s. Under the Japanese government's strict regulation of civil aviation, ANA was basically restricted to carrying passengers and freight on Japan's major domestic routes, while JAL basically monopolized the country's overseas air service.
ANA began making chartered flights to other East Asian countries in the 1970s, however, in the late 1980s it began regular service on major international routes, taking advantage of certain deregulation measures in the industry.

The company has subsidiaries involved in aircraft maintenance, repair, refueling and hotels for All Nippon's passengers. It operates 9 specially painted jets: 3 Pokemon jets, 4 Star Alliance jets, and one Woody jet in affiliation with USJ. As regards ANA's destination, it operates services to 49 destinations in Japan and 22 international routes. The routes network extends throughout Asia, Oceania, North America and Europe. Narita International Airport is ANA's key international hub.
