What Airlines Owe You for Lost Baggage?

Category: Airline & Luggage By Countries

It is not surprising that occasionally luggage may go missing, because the world's airlines carry more than 800 million pieces of luggage in a year.
If you find at the arrival airport that your baggage is missing, you should immediately report to the airline representative and complete a Property Irregularity Report (P.I.R.). When the report is not given to you, you should ask for one, because this is your evidence that you have reported the loss. This Greece airlines lost luggage guide will help you in explaining what do to and how to claim.

Take Olympic Airlines as an example - if you are unable to locate your baggage upon arrival, before you leave the airport you should apply to the Lost and Found desk and lodge a Property Irregularity Report (P.I.R.). A report will be filed with all the details (flight number, date, accurate information on the missing baggage, etc.) and then a tracing procedure will be initiated.

As soon as airlines find your luggage, they take all actions necessary to deliver it to your home or to any address indicated by you and provide information regarding the delivery. If your baggage is not delivered to you within the next 5 days after the issuance of the P.I.R., you should send them the following documents for further action: a detailed list of contents for each missing bag/suitcase, the copy of the Property Irregularity Report (P.I.R.) received upon arrival, a copy of your airplane-ticket, a copy of the checked-in luggage receipt (tag number).

Most of the airlines won't actually declare your luggage as lost until after it's been missing for 21 days. After 21 days you are able to put in your claim for compensation if your luggage is completely lost. The airline will then normally compensate the owner. The passengers must then list the contents of their baggage.
