Travelers may be in trouble with repacking their baggage in the crowed airports. Here we provide useful information on JAL & ANA airline baggage allowance, excess baggage fee, and more, which will certainly be a great help for your travel.

Free Baggage Allowance
The total JAL free baggage allowance of each passenger shall be as follows:

1. A passenger paying a first class fare shall, unless otherwise provided in JAL's regulations, receive a free checked baggage allowance of 40 kilograms;

2. A passenger paying an intermediate class fare shall, unless otherwise provided in JAL's regulations, receive a free checked baggage allowance of 30 kilograms;

3. A passenger paying an economy class fare shall, unless otherwise provided in JAL's regulations, receive a free checked baggage allowance of 20 kilograms;

ANA free baggage including carry-on baggage is up to 15kg per person. For baggage of 15 kg to 45kg, an excess baggage fee will be charged. Please note that ANA cannot accept baggage over 45kg as checked baggage. Each passenger may check in up to three pieces of baggage, provided each does not exceed 50cm x 60cm x 120cm. Besides, ski equipment, golf bag and fishing equipment may not be accepted for aircraft type Q83, Q84, F50 and A320 because of bulk space.

Carry-on Baggage Allowance
JAL's passengers should limit their carry-on baggage to one piece, with linear dimensions not exceeding 115cm, in addition to such personal effects for in cabin use as handbag, camera, etc. Total weight of such articles should not exceed 10kg (22lbs.).

Besides personal belongings (hand bags, cameras, umbrellas, etc.), ANA passengers can also carry only one piece of baggage satisfying the right conditions of the aircraft cabin. A baggage may be included in checked baggage when the size is not suited for the cabin. Plus, carrying on of large fragile baggage (musical instruments, etc.) into cabin is limited depending on the seat type.

Excess Baggage Fee
Baggage exceeding the free baggage allowance will be charged with excess baggage fee per piece. JAL permits one carry-on bag weighing less than 10kg, in addition to two checked bags. The size limits on these bags vary by type of route. Excess fees are calculated using this formula: Normal economy class fare between boarding points (adult one-way) x 1.5% x excess baggage weight in kg, rounded up to the nearest hundred yen. Keep in mind that if you got a sale fare, they will use the normal fare to make the calculation.

Additional charge may apply depending on the size and weight of excess baggage. For baggage weighing over 23kg (50lbs) and up to 32kg (70lbs), 25 US dollars per piece will be charged for the first two bags.
Please note that charge per piece is different between departure from Japan and departure from U.S.A. or Guam. In addition to the above, a separate set fee may be charged for sports equipment such as skis, golf bags, surfboards, and musical instruments. As for other departure cities and details, please contact your travel agent or Customer Service Center.
