Until a few decades ago, trunks and chests formed major part of luggage and was the only means, by far, for people to pack their belongings during a trip.
But, times have changed and in the modern world, you have a wide range of luggage. Different materials of construction like Polyester, ballistic nylon, leather, polypropylene, or denier fabric are employed in the luggage industry today. It was only after the second world war that the type of suitcases and bags made their appearance. In the years that followed, air travel increased rapidly and it became necessary for the airline industry to lay down design specifications for luggage. Today there are very clear specifications concerning both hold luggage as well as hand luggage.


Different types of luggage

Wheeled upright - This type of luggage is relatively new and incorporates a handle extending from the luggage body allowing the user to roll the luggage in its upright position.

Garment bag - This type of luggage is particularly useful for longer types of garments like suits which need appropriate packing to prevent creasing. Garment bags are available in wheeled as well as non wheeled models. In luggage sets, garment bags will be the largest piece.

Tote - Generally, a small bag designed to be worn on shoulder. However, in modern times, wheeled models or totes with extended handles have gained popularity.

Duffel bag - This is a bag shaped like a barrel, exclusively soft and suitable for casual travel. However, there will be little or no organization inside. In some places, this is called "duffle" bags in place of "duffel" and comes with wheels and/or the extended handles too.

Carpet bag - This is representative of bags traditionally made out of carpets.

Rolling Luggage - This is a collective representation of the wheeled variant of luggage that may or may not have the telescopic handles.
Typically, rolling luggage will have two wheels fixed on one end and a handle on the opposite side for moving the luggage vertically.

While these represent the various design variations, another major consideration in luggage manufacture is the size and weight restrictions placed by the airline industry. Both cabin luggage and hold luggage have specific restrictions in terms of size and weight. Cabin luggage falling outside the specified size can cause serious embarrassment and inconvenience during air travel. Most travelers are aware of the constraints and readily check their baggage into the holds if they foresee a problem.
