Weight of the luggage was never a major consideration during days when the major mode of travel was steamers or rail and porters were always in abundance. Ruggedness and durability were the hall marks.
Brass fittings with locks resembling a bank vault adorned the luggage pieces those days. But, those are all gone now and airlines have their own set of rigid rules about the size as well as quantity of luggage you can carry.

Weight is a major consideration particularly with the dashes between gates at the airport getting longer and DIY becoming more the norm. Some lifting can still be involved particularly while climbing stairs. However, it can safely be argued that much of the pain associated with carrying luggage has now been relegated to the past.

Definition of light weight

About 10 pounds for a 22 inches carry on should qualify for light weight. Leather is of course resistant to damage, has a longer life and affords good looks, it is relatively heavy. The hard sided ABS, aluminium bags too suffer from the same condition. Nylon in its different manifestations should qualify much better in the light weight segment. Nylon with honeycomb frames have made luggage leaner without sacrificing resilience and strength.

Light weight luggage is also available in different configurations to suit individual needs. The built-in wheels, backpack straps, side handles, etc. make the handling easier. In the larger variants, the telescopic handles are a boon to the traveler.

Some points to consider

The choice of your light weight luggage can be influenced by several factors such as:

• The frequency of your travel - once a month to twice a year
• Whether you prefer check in to cabin baggage
• Whether you prefer multiple bags to a single bag
• Whether you fancy keeping up with change in trends or remain happy with the tried and trusted lieutenant

For frequent travelers, sturdy luggage is the need of the hour, what with the journey through the flapping strips into the unknown realm of baggage handling. Infrequent travelers can be content with the less expensive variants though. And, some people have a preference to variety than quality. These are people who seek to be in tune with the times than bother about frequent purchases.

In choosing luggage for optimal performance and functionality, some home work would be helpful. Consider the different materials of constructions, manufacturer warranties and how much you want out of your luggage.
