The messenger bags are also termed as 'courier bags' made of cotton, leather, or nylon.
They are carried on the shoulder, secured with a fastening belt around the chest. The bag comfortably hangs over the back of the waist. Initially, the messenger bags used to be carried by the courier or postal people, who used to ply on bicycles, horses, or on foot. But, more interestingly, nowadays it has become a fashion statement of the younger generation. Contrastingly, even today, deliverers of some Royal Mails of UK use big messenger bags.

Originally, the design of the messenger bags of modern age are the bags of utility linemen, who used to carry their tools in it to work on the high poles during the year 1950. It used to be manufactured by De Martini Globe Canvas Company established by Frank De Martini. Later, this company used to be looked after by Marge and Kathleen, his two daughters. Earlier it used to be an underground shop located at 177 Mott Street in Little Italy, New York city. Later on it was shifted to New Haven of Connecticut.

The messenger bags were remodeled in 1980 by John Peters who also founded the Manhattan Portage. The canvas (the original material) was replaced by corduroy and secured by nylon straps and plastic frame, which in no time became the 'must-have' for the bicycle messengers of Manhattan. Nevertheless, each company added their own signature color and specialty so that they are identified from afar.

Messenger bags are no doubt comfortable than rucksacks and the objects inside are much more easily accessible to the user. With a messenger bag, cycling can be done without any problem! Adjustable straps and buckles, along with other attachments give them a traditional as well as a modern look. One can even affix U-locks, phone holders, or torch-lights for further help.
New patterns of straps do not let them move when the person is riding a bicycle but the bag can be hung easily at the front to reach for the things inside more easily.

The contemporary messenger bags are more of a fashion 'in-thing' than a utility bag. Boys or girls, whether in urban or rural areas, can use it for carrying bigger items, which are cumbersome to carry in small purses or pockets. School or college goers love to use these weather friendly messenger bags which give them a COOL look too.

Messenger bags therefore can be defined as a modern concept wrapped in the history of utility...!!!
