The canvas messenger bags are ideal as a basic bag to meet your daily needs. It can also stand in as a gear bag for use in emergencies.
They have the rugged looks and therefore will suit people who have a flavor for the casual looking bags. For those who prefer stylish and trendy stuff, you always have other choices.

Useful but not trendy
The canvass messenger bags can be considered pretty big. When you look at it as a shoulder bag, it probably can hold adequate gear to help you reach home or perhaps a safe location in times of emergency. These are not trendy or stylish by any stretch of imagination and lack the whistles and bells which come with the modern stuff. But, if you consider its usefulness exclusively, then the canvas messenger bags do measure up as a simple bag for carrying basic gear.

The construction
These bags are generally in canvas of olive drab color and have shoulder straps 2 inch wide with no padding. The strap itself is stitched along to the bag with reinforcing canvas. The canvas employed is not hard and is comparable to jeans or soft canvas. Specific enclosures may be absent in the main compartment and Velcro flaps are employed to hold things together. The flaps have two pockets which can take in some of the day's essentials depending on your schedules.

Not to get drenched
When you have small items which need to be put into the bag, you can use the zippered pocket inside the main compartment. The larger items can be housed in a smaller pocket on the side. Each side has a pocket and the contents can be secured through a snap. This is not a water proof bag though it can take in a bit of rain. During downpours, you should protect your bag and your own self.
If you are caught in the downpour, get aside and make sure that the content of your bag which are susceptible to water damage are protected inside a plastic bag which is preferably zippered.

Summing up, we can say that the canvass messenger bags come in handy when you need to pack up some survival gear to be kept in the car or your office, or even on a motor cycle journey. While being light these bags offer adequate space to store the gear that you could need to cross the initial hurdles in times of an exigency.
