It is most important to get an airline carry on bag which is, first and foremost, within the maximum allowable size and also suits your requirements and taste.

In most cases, the maximum allowable size of any carry on luggage is 45". All reputed luggage manufacturers are aware of this restriction and they design bags that conform to the standardization rules.

You may have a bag which is of unconventional shape but measures up to the standard 45" in total. But, there is a small chance that it gets rejected as a carry on. Therefore, it is best to go through the guidelines provided by the particular airlines because standards do vary from aircraft to aircraft.

Now, when you go to buy a carry on bag, you do not specifically want it for just one trip. It is most likely that you will need to use it again for another trip by another airline which may or may not have a different set of rules regarding the size of carry on luggage. The maximum allowable size is mostly never less than 45" but if you happen to travel by a very small aircraft such a scenario may arise. So it is always safer to buy a bag which is a size or two smaller than the maximum allowable size. If every passenger starts carrying one carry on luggage of the maximum size allowed the aircraft will have problem in balancing!

While buying the carry on bag, ensure that the bag is measured in front of you taking into considerations all side pockets, wheels, handles into account. Many a times it happens so that you pick up a bag tagged as 'carry on' and it gets rejected at the security check-point for being over-sized.

A back-pack type of a carry on bag is a good buy as it keeps your hands free to hold your ticket, your coat, a magazine, or a toddler.

A carry on bag with wheels along with straps to carry it on your back is in fact the best buy.

On international flights, there are stricter restrictions on the weight of your carry on luggage. Sometimes, the maximum weight allowed is incredibly low. So it is always a safe bet to go through the luggage policies of the airlines in question in advance and buy the smallest carry on that you can manage with.

You should choose one that you can manage effortlessly. It should be made of lightweight materials with good quality zips and fasteners. You should be able to shovel it below the seat as well.
