What's the difference between satchels and totes?

Satchel bags are not only restricted to schoolbags.
They have become popular accessories for both men and women. They usually come with long straps which can be worn through the body. Totes are also popular fashion accessories, which can be used for different purposes. What's the difference between satchels and totes? The main difference is the design and materials.

Designs

1) Straps

Designed with long straps, satchels usually can be worn diagonally crossing the body. The bags are hanging on the opposite hip.

Tote bags are equipped with short handles. They can be either worn over the shoulder or placed in the hands.

2) Size

Satchel bags come in small to medium sized zip top bags. They usually cannot hold too many things. They are more delicate, which is esp. true for satchel purses.

Totes are roomy bags. They are made to carry everything from books to clothes. At the same time, tote bags have been developed into fashion items.

Materials

Satchels are most often made of either leather or cloth, which have soft sides. The best choice for leather satchels are bags made of tan leather or brown leather. Many high-end designers offer fabulous cloth satchels, like Coach and Dooney & Bourke.

Totes come in various materials, ranging from vintage luxury leather to the cheapest recycled plastic. They provide a wide variety of choices for materials, with different price ranges.

Though totes and satchels have distinctive features, both of them can be used for various purposes. They can be used in the office, for travelling and even for special events.
