What kinds of materials are used for tents?

Tents are used for camping, military, recreational activities and emergency, such as war, earthquakes and fire.
Different tents come in different materials, both for the body and poles. There are three main kinds of materials for the body of tents: nylon, canvas and polyester. Poles are either made of fiberglass or aluminum.

The Body

- Nylon

Nylon is the most common material used for tents. Nylon tents are lightweight, durable and able to keep water from leaking in the inside of tents. Tents made of nylon are less expensive comparatively.

- Canvas

Canvas tents are the most recognizable ones for emergency situations. Tents made of canvas are very sturdy to stand severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain or high winds. But canvas cannot breathe well. Canvas tents are not well-ventilated.

- Polyester

Polyester is the best material used for tents. Tents made of polyester are ultra lightweight. Polyester is extremely resistant to UV rays and fire retardant. It can provide better water-proof qualities. Many branded tents are made of polyester.

The poles

- Fiberglass

Less expensive tents usually come with poles made of fiberglass. Fiberglass is lightweight and cheap, thus becoming the first choice for many tents in the market. But poles made of fiberglass are not sturdy enough.

- Aluminum

Better tents use aluminum for their poles because of its high intensity, lightweight and good resilient.
