Now, tote has become a unisex bag which covers a wide range of usages.
You can find beach totes, business totes, lunch totes, shopping totes and many other types. Though there are numerous types of totes in the market, the common materials for them are just nylon, leather, canvas and vinyl.

Nylon is one of the most commonly used materials for totes. As synthetic fabric, it is quite durable and lightweight. Among many kinds of nylon, ballistic nylon is the usually employed one for totes. For instance, most of Timbuk2 totes are out of tough ballistic nylon. However, nylon totes are not breathable and has poor moisture absorbability.

Leather is often applied into making upscale business totes and durable laptop tote bags. Leather totes are notable for subtle luster, good stretchability, softness and high abrasion resistance. They are more expensive than bags out of other materials. However, there is little choice of leather tote bags for colors, styles and shapes. Leather totes get scratches easily as well, so they need extra delicate care.

Canvas is the most frequently used material for school and sports totes. Totes out of canvas are extremely durable and tough. They stand any wear and tear and sturdy for heavy items like thick textbooks. This material is quite breathable and waterproof. Young generation prefer to choose canvas totes as they match any wear for various occasions. Main disadvantage of canvas is hard to get rid of stains from, violent scrub may get it turn white or fade.

Vinyl is a kind of synthetic fiber which has high quality of stretching. It is often used to make clear bags which look like plastic ones. Vinyl is easy to dye and there is a variety of color options for vinyl totes. Many beach totes are made of vinyl for a cool and stylish appearance. However, this material is not quite durable, especially when getting damp.
