Is it possible to claim compensation for EU flight delays?

Flight delays are not that uncommon due to various reasons, such as weather or mechanical problems.
But they are nightmares anyway, which might mean waiting for an extra amount of time or even overnight. Many people are wondering whether they can ask for compensation if the flight is delayed and causes losses. It all depends.

Conditions for Compensation

Passengers are able to ask for compensation under the EU law if they suffered from considerable flight delays, but only when the airline takes full responsibility for the delays. Exceptional circumstances are excluded and not covered by the policy.

Standards of Compensation

Delay more than 2 hours:In the case of any delays for more than 2 hours, airlines must provide passengers with free meals, drinks, phone calls, text messages, etc.

Delay more than 5 hours:If passengers come across flight delays for 5 hours or longer, they can choose either to have the full refund of the ticket or change routes to the final destinations with no extra charge. The EU law has clear provisions for this sort of flight delays.

Passengers stay overnight: If the flight is deferred to leave until the next day, stranded passengers are entitled to have compensation of hotel accommodations and transportation costs, all at the airline's expense.
