How to choose good locks for bikes?

Since when has bike locking been so tricky? Lock your cycle on an empty street?
It then gets stolen even if there is a camera. CCTV just won't deter a bike thief.

Feel you don't have money to buy a better lock? The lock will then get broken and the bike stolen. An "experienced" thief needs cutting equipment and some time to get through thick chains. Not to mention those thin locks.

- If you are leaving bicycles in a low-lit area or college campuses, you'd better go for the high-security locks.

U-locks - Also called as D-locks, U-locks are sturdy metal rings in a U shape with crossbar sections. They are more secure to protect bike from stealing as they can resist cutting with high-leverage hand tools. To use a U-lock, better lock the bike physically to some immovable object.

Chain locks - You will be impressed by the toughness of a chain lock. These chain locks are actually available in various types and sizes and a thick one can be strong enough to restrain an elephant. Usually covered in fabric or plastic, chain locks are designed to disallow leveraging and resist chisels or hacksaws. They are usually long enough to lock wheels, the frame together and attach the bike to some other object.

- Fortunately, you are in a low-crime neighborhood. In this case, a quality low-security lock is portable and sturdy enough to protect your bike.

Cable locks - A cable lock looks similar to a chain one, but in a much thinner way. Cable locks are usually made of flexible cables to provide rather low security for bikes. They are more suitable for kids due to the light weight.

Wheel locks - Wheel locks are also known as O-locks or ring-locks. They are low security mechanism which can prevent riding the bicycle by immobilizing the rear wheel, but the bike can still be lifted and carried away.
