Every time we leave the house, we give our trust and faith into locks without reservation.
For the pragmatic facts of locks, we've already had enough, but how about a perceptual understanding of locks? The lock, a common article of daily use, has a rich history with some interesting pieces worth mention.

- The oldest lock

What is the first lock like? That is hard to tell as locking one's property for security has been a concern of people since the very early history of human civilization. Before the first real lock, early solutions to securing property included knots or hamper. In 1842, the oldest known lock, about 4000 years old, was discovered in Persia and credited to the ancient Egyptians. As for metal locks, the ancient Roman built them first.

- Mechanical locks

Locks involved mechanism for more security in many civilizations at the same time. About 4000 years ago, the Egyptians used mechanical locks which were the forerunner of modern pin tumbler locks. And the first use of wards was attributed to the Romans. Since then, warding had been a basic locking mechanism for many years.

- Castle locks

During the 14th to the 17th century, special locks were required by noblemen throughout Europe for castle doors. Those locks were designed with coats-of-arms and special symbolic shapes.

- Locks for treasure chests

When it comes to treasure chests at the ancient time, large metal locks may be mentioned. As they were designed to protect precious items inside, the chest locks always had a study look. Mounted inside the chest, they were usually in a vertical position.

- Lock collections for a lady

There were even collections of special locks to please Catherine the Great, Czarina of Russia from 1762 to 1796. The locks were constructed by locksmiths in fanciful forms.
