What are the different types of locks?

Though the old locks are mostly mechanical, there are many more types of them evolved from advanced technology.

Mechanical Locks

Mechanical locks usually refer to tumbler ones operated by tuning removable keys.

Pin tumbler locks - As the most widespread lock type, pin tumbler locks use pins of different lengths to prevent the lock from opening with wrong keys. As the design was refined by the lock manufacturers Yale, they can be also called as Yale locks.

With 6-8 pins arranged in a circular pattern, there is the special variety of pin tumbler locks - a tubular pin tumbler lock.

Warded locks - A warded lock is a type of ancient lock designs with a set of wards to prevent them from opening without the correct keys.

Lever locks - Lever locks were first designed to replace the warded locks in the 19th century. They involve a set of levers to prevent the bolts from moving.

Electronic Locks

Electronic locks involve electromechanical means of operating. Usually with the use of magnets or any card reader, electronic locks vary in many types.

Among the basic electronic locks, a magnetic one is the most common type. There is a large electro-magnet mounted on the door frame and when the door is closed with magnet powered, the corresponding armature is held fast to the magnet.

For some higher security lever, there are also electronic locks requiring numerical codes or passwords to get opened.
