How are air cargo companies getting paid?

As air cargo service usually owns advantages on speed and efficiency, many people choose air freight companies to transport goods by aircraft, though the cost is generally more expensive than other methods.
Basically, you should consult those companies for rates information, but it's also helpful to get a general idea beforehand. Air freight charge usually contains two parts.

Applicable Tariff and the Chargeable Weight - Air cargo companies are paid on the basis of applicable tariff and the chargeable weight, which refers to the actual gross or volume of any given shipment. For dense goods like food or bottled drinks, gross weight is usually applied to calculate for the chargeable weight; and for bulk items like furnishings or building materials, volume weight is then taken to calculating.

Other Charges - Besides the basic tariff and the chargeable weight, you also need to pay for other charges that are related to carriage of the consigned cargo, such as charges for pick-up or delivery, storage fees, customs fees, insurance fees, surcharges and other similar ones.

For example, if you tend to transport your pet as a cargo, you may be asked to pay customs clearance fees or terminal handling charges.

Getting accurate charges for air cargo services by yourself can be quite hard, but many air freight companies will be happy to do this job for you.
