What're the basic types of antique trunks?

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are interested in and captivated by antique trunks.
These trunks are not only useful and decorative, but also full of mystery and history.

The antique trunks were made out of many materials and in a large variety of shapes and sizes. No matter you are an experienced collector or just have a sudden crush on antique trunks, you should have the knowledge on basic types.

Round Top Trunks:

The top of round top trunks slope only from the center to the front and back, while the crest of the top is consistent across its length. You can find metal, leather covered or completely wooden trunks.

Flat Top Trunks:

The flat top trunks made rare appearance from the mid 1850's and had a mass production since 1880's. These trunks feature either flat or slightly-curved tops. They usually had tray(s), but no extras. Most of these trunks are made out of canvas. Letter and patterned paper materials can also be found.

Dome Top Trunks:

These trunks are generally constructed with a curved top sloping in both directions and a tray(s) with various compartments in the bottom. They come in various sizes and styles, ranging from very plain to garish ones. The exact origin of these trunks is unknown.

Monitor Top Trunks:

Monitor top trunks were popular in the late 1870's to the late 1910's. You can find labor-intensive hardwood slats or all metal structure on earlier examples. If you view one such trunk from one side, you can see a lying-down "D" formed by its rounded front and rear corners.

Saratoga Trunks:

Saratoga trunks were limited to before 1880s. If loosely defined, they include all other trunk styles we see today. Characterizing intricate compartments, trays, and hardware, they are usually larger and more ornate than other dome top trunks.
