How to diagnose airbag problems?

Airbags systems are very necessary to protect occupants in car accidents.
But any man-made system might break down sometime. That's why the knowledge of diagnosing airbag problems would come in handy. You might think it's time to replace the airbags in your car when coming across airbag problems. It's recommended to diagnose these problems before replacing anything since problems may not be caused by airbag itself. You can follow these steps listed below to diagnose these problems.

Tips on diagnose airbag problems

1. Shut down the engine and turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

2. Check the airbag warning lights on the dashboard to ensure they are not illuminated. Otherwise, you might get a faulty airbag system. This problem would be solved by resetting the codes in the car's SRS airbag system.

3. If the indicator light blinks continuously, put your ear down close to the control module of the airbag system to check if there is any noise. Remove the steering wheel column to check the spiral cable if you do hear some noise. In this case, the spiral cable might be grounded.

4. Turn off the battery and disconnect the negative cable on the battery.

5. Remove fuse panel cover to disconnect the fuse. Look at the metal strip inside the fuse carefully to see if it's broken. Broken strip will disable the airbags and you need to replace the fuse immediately.
