Why can't we use cell phone on airplanes?

Cell phone has not been allowed on an airplane in USA since 1991 when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prohibited the use of cell phone on a plane.
But people are always wondering why FCC did this.

Cell phone may interfere with the navigation system of an airplane

The use of cell phone on board would interfere with the instruments in the main cabin. The signals emitted by a cell phone could disrupt the wireless navigation system of an airplane, which might cause equipment system malfunction.

Cell phone might disrupt communication system of a plane

Disruption in ground communications may be caused due to cell phone interference. Sometimes, this can result in a plane crash or other devastating disasters. Numerous Airlines have reported that mobile phones do interfere with the communication system as well as compass function and cabin pressure.

The restrictions regarding cell phone use have been changed slightly in recently years and policies vary by airlines. Some airlines have already permitted their passengers to use cell phone during the flight, but some still ban all the electronic equipments that would send or receive radio-frequency signal.

Since there isn't any regulation about the use of cell phone on private planes, many private flights allow passengers to use mobile phones.
