How to add zippered pocket to your bag step-by-step?

Category: Pocket

Most of clothes and bags come with zippered pockets which offer easy access to your iPod, cell phone, wallet or other items.
If you get a bag without any zippered pockets, you might wonder if you can add a zippered pocket by yourself. Making a zippered pocket is kind of complicated. However, it's not difficult.

Step 1: Draw the outline of your pocket.

Figure out the size of your pocket by placing the largest item you would put into the pocket on a paper. Draw the outline of the pocket with at least half an inch added to the width and length. 0

Step 2: Draw the zipper opening.

Draw the outline of the opening of the pocket. The zipper opening should be half an inch from the tops edge of the pocket. Pay attention to the width of the opening and make sure it is wide enough so that you can get items in and out with ease. Plus, 1/5 inch should be left between the stitch line and the ends of the opening.

Step 3: Cut out the pocket bag.

Find out a cloth. Cut out the pocket bags according to the size of the pocket and draw the outline of the pocket on them. Then cut out another piece of fabric which is 1/2 inch wider and longer than the opening. Draw the outline of the opening on the center of the smaller fabric.

Step 4: Decide the position of the pocket.

Turn your handbags inside out, if possible. Decide where you would like to add a pocket to and mark the ends of zippered pocket opening on the lining with two pins. Have the right side of the lining facing you and try to place it flat.

Step 5: stitch the zippered opening.

Pick out one piece of the pocket bag and put it on the lining with the markings in the center of the pocket opening drawn on the pocket bag. Make sure you've placed the pocket bag flat and then stitch all the way along the outline of the pocket opening.

Step 6: Slice open the opening.

Use a scissors or rotary cutter to slice open the opening. Trim the corner of the opening, but do not clip through the stitches.

Step 7: Stitch the zipper.

Pull the pocket bag through the zipper opening. Zip up the zipper and pull it through the opening as well. Then center it in the opening. Sew the zipper onto the bag along the edge of the opening.

Step 8: Finish the pocket.

Unzip the zipper and get the pocket bag out. Pick the other piece of the pocket bag and pin them together to form a pocket. Stitch all the way along the outline you've drawn on the pocket bags.
