How to make pockets for garment bags?

Category: Pocket

You might be in need of more pocket when traveling domestically or internationally with garment bags.
Pockets inside of a garment bag are ideal to store your shoes, socks or other small items while outside pockets provide easy-access to snacks, water bottles and so on.

Step 1: Figure out the size of the pocket you are going to make.

Before cutting and sewing, you should figure out the size of the pocket first. If possible, use a pattern to help you figure out the general dimension of your pocket. Write down the width and length of the pocket just in case you might forget them.

Step 2: Cut the material.

Find out a cloth to make this pocket. Cut a square or rectangle out from the cloth according to the size of your pocket. You might use two pieces of fabric if necessary.

Step 3: Stitch the edge to form a pocket.

Fold the entire fabric in half or match the two pieces of fabric to form a pocket. Leave an opening for the pocket, and then sew the other 2(or 3) sides of the pocket with about 1/4 inch left around each edge. Be sure to leave at least half an inch to hem the opening.

In order to make the pocket more sturdy, you can sew back to create a double stitch. Then, trim the excess fabric around each side.

Step 4: Check the pocket.

Put your hand inside of the pocket to make sure there isn't any hole or loose stitches. Cram some items into the pocket to check the storage capacity of the pocket. If it is not big enough, you might need to find another cloth and repeat these steps to make a bigger one instead.

Step 5: Hem the opening.

Fold the front as well as the back piece of the opening at least half an inch over. Sew these two pieces separately to reinforce the opening.

Step 6: Sew the pocket onto your garment bag.

Remember to trim off excess fabric of the corners of the pocket. Turn the pocket inside out and sew the back piece of the opening onto the garment bag.
