How to sew drawstring tote bags?

It's quite easy to sew a drawstring tote bag by yourself if you're looking for something really beautiful and practical.
Different sizes of these bags can serve as storage bags, gift bags or even travel bags. All you need in the making process is some materials and your spare time. You're sure to enjoy the fun if you have a chance to try.

Prepare materials and tools

If you prefer to sew a waterproof drawstring tote bag, stick to fabrics like nylon or laminated polyester. If not, any type of material will be ok. Prepare enough fabric according to your needed size. You also need a color ribbon, thread, sewing machine, and scissors.

Cut the fabric according to the size

Figure out what you're using the drawstring tote bag for: a laundry pail liner or a gift bag or other uses. The uses of the bag directly determine the size you need. Then cut two pieces of fabric. Remember to add 1/2 inch to the width and 3 inches to the length for your desired size of the bag, which are left for the seams.

Sew the two pieces together

Put the two pieces of cut fabric together and sew the sides and bottom edge. If you have a sewing machine, set it on the overlock stitch and pin the sides together. With the help of sewing pins, you can also pin the edges together by hand. Leave the top edge open for the drawstring.

Set the shape of the tote bag

Try to fold the top edge about 1/2inch and repeat the process on the other side. Stitch around the folded area. Then fold the same edge down about 2 inches and secure the lower edge of your fold by pinning, making the casing for your drawstring tote bag.

Insert the ribbon

Attach the ribbon to one end of the drawstring. Insert the other top of the ribbon through the casing. Leave 2 inches on both ends of the ribbon for a knot to keep the drawstring from sliding through the casing. Then turn the right side out and you've made your own bag.
