An airport baggage handler is a person who sorts, loads and unloads baggage including suitcases and garment bags and other cargo like mail, counter-to-counter package for transport via airplanes.
They may also be known as ramp agents, airport hands or operatives.

What an airport handler can do

- Collecting, sorting and examining the baggage delivered by conveyor belt, baggage handlers should ensure all the baggage is sent to the correct destination in time.

- Guiding planes into the proper gates, baggage handler also need to account for what baggage may have been loaded in which compartments.

- Baggage handlers are responsible for guiding planes into the proper gates and insuring the ramp is secure and safe for passengers to enter and exit the plane.

- As mail and freight arrives at a destination, baggage handlers need to scan each package and deliver it to its proper aircraft.

- Sometimes, baggage handlers need to help other staff to maintain aircraft like cleaning passenger compartments.

- In some cases, baggage handlers are required to assist baggage claim staff to handle damaged or missing luggage. This includes tracing or assessing the damage and arranging the delivery to customer's home.

- Baggage handlers need to check if the aircraft has been loaded to the specifications of the load agent. Make sure the ramp is secure for passengers to enter and exit the plane.

Working Hours

For full-time baggage handlers, they probably work on a shift system, covering about 39 hours a week (including evenings, weekends and holidays). Shifts may last up to 12 hours for some workers. Part-time jobs of baggage handlers may be available.
