How to choose waterproof backpacks?

Today out there on the market, many manufactures claim their backpacks to be waterproof. Are they really qualified waterproof backpacks? Can they keep your stuff 100% dry? Shop around before making a final decision.

What kind of materials are used?

Materials commonly used to make waterproof backpacks are PVC, nylon, polyurethane or combination of the above materials. They are generally stiffer and more durable. For instance, Jansport waterproof backpacks are coated with an ounce and a quarter of polyurethane which can at least produce a waterproof rating of 40 mulleins. A waterproof rating of 25 mulleins is considered waterproof by the U.S. Army.

How is the design and layout?

Water can always find a way through wherever there are zippers or stitching.
So the seams of backpacks are crucial. If the seams are welded and taped, water will not get through easily. Besides, zippers also require special design and technique to make sure that backpacks are closed tightly.

How long does it remain waterproof?

Actually, various backpacks remain waterproof for different periods of time. Some tend to last longer than others. The manufacturer should provide information about the waterproof nature of the backpack. There are even waterproof backpacks which can float on water now.

What's the loading capacity?

As waterproof backpacks are widely used for camping, kayaking or other outdoor activities, loading capacity of backpacks is important if you have lots of stuff to bring. To distribute the weight during your trip, padded shoulder straps, waist strap as well as back panel are necessary.
