How to waterproof your gear in backpacks?

Experienced backpackers know very well that prevention is better than cure.
Nothing is more annoying than wet nasty stuff in your backpacks which have been soaked through by a sudden rain. Even the most avid backpackers would get frustrated. The following tips may help you.

- Prepare some sealable plastic bags. Put your dry gear in a sealed bag and wet stinky stuff in a separated seal. Thus the dry gear will stay dry. And the stinky ones won't affect the surroundings.

- If you are going to cross a river, you can seal some air into the inside bags. They will get puffed up and can float on the river. Make sure that the inside bag is sealed tightly.

- Get a rain cover for your backpack. Lots of backpack stores sell this kind of rain covers.
To some extent rain cover can be your lifesaver in a sudden downpour.

- If the fabrics of your backpack are water resistant, you just need to deal with seams, zippers or any other openings. Use a heavy duty trash bag as liner for the inside of your backpack. It works as an extra layer for waterproofing.

- Buy waterproofing spays. Outdoor stores sell this kind of spay which is contained in a can or something else. The price is around $10.

The above tips can just work in some casual situation. If you are a professional backpacker or aquatic activity enthusiast, you had better get a fully waterproof backpack from guaranteed manufactures.
