Delta Air Lines' Policy on Children Traveling Alone

Category: Airline

Sometimes parents might have no choice but leave their little ones traveling alone.
For slightly older students, traveling alone would be cool, since there will be so much fun and exciting. However, this is not true for younger children. If you are one of these kids or your little one is going to take a flying trip without being accompanied, then there is something worth your attention. Most airlines in the United States, including Delta Air Lines, have certain restrictions regarding unaccompanied young passengers. The following are rules from Delta Air Lines on kids traveling alone. Be sure to read them carefully before booking your flight, if Delta is your airline of choice.

Unaccompanied Minor Program Rules

Delta's Unaccompanied Minor Program Rules are aimed to keep children under the age of 4 to be companied by at least one adult over the age of 18, when they are traveling on Delta flights. Kids between 5 and 7 years old would not be permitted to travel alone with Delta, except on nonstop flights. Those between 8 and 14 years old will be able to travel alone on both nonstop and connecting flights, while kids aged 15 and older would not be required to be accompanied during flying with Delta. And the Unaccompanied Minor Program is just an option for kids over the age of 15. Of course, children between 15 and 17 years old can also choose to travel by air as UMNR.
In that case, they will only be allowed to travel alone on nonstop as well as connecting flights.

Note that, these rules would apply to all the young passengers involved in Delta's Unaccompanied Minor Program, no matter you are about to fly with Delta or Delta Connection. (Except passengers prefer to fly on American Eagle flights which are operated as Delta Connection) Besides, children under the age of 15 but allowed to travel alone on connecting flights would only be permitted to connect to other flights operated by Delta, Delta Connection, Air France or KLM.

Both children and parents should also keep in mind that, kids under the age of 15 would never be permitted to fly alone on Red Eye flights or the last connecting flight of the day, even though they might be allowed to travel alone on Delta nonstop or connecting flights.

Unaccompanied Minor Program Fee

Choosing to fly as UMNR does mean that kids can get a safer and more comfortable flying experience when they are traveling alone. However, a certain amount of fees would be charged for passengers taking part in Delta's Unaccompanied Minor Program.

Normally, the program fee would cost you 100 Canada/US dollars or Euros each way, whether you are traveling domestically or internationally on nonstop or connecting flights. Children between 15 and 17 years old will also be charged if they prefer to travel as UMNR. Children over the age of 4 who would like to travel together in the same compartment only need to pay 100 dollars for program fee.

If you like, you can pay for the Unaccompanied Minor Program when checking in. Please be advised, the program fee is only mandatory for kids aged 5 to 14, and it is non-refundable once your flight has taken off.
