Delta Air Lines' Policy Regarding Delayed, Damaged or Lost Baggage

Category: Airline

For any traveler who chooses to fly with Delta Air Lines, the airline spares no effort to ensure a perfect experience.
Also, keeping your baggage safe and intact during transportation is a part of its responsibilities. Whenever your baggage gets delayed or damaged, Delta would try its best to return or repair it as soon as possible. If your baggage has been lost during transit, Delta Air Lines would take full responsibility for your lost and make compensation. For more details about Delta's policy on delayed, damaged or lost baggage, take a look at this article.

Delayed baggage

It must be annoying if your baggage can not arrive at the airport along with you. Nevertheless, no matter how exhausted you are after the journey, you should turn to the baggage claim in the airport immediately if you can not find your baggage. Delta will give its passenger a file with a reference number. With this number, customers would be able to track the status of their delayed baggage through an online tracking system. If the baggage is still not transported to you after over 12 hours of your claim, you will be able to request a bag fee rebate from the airline.

Normally, the reimbursement for delayed baggage would be 50 dollars for the first 24 hours. Thereafter, Delta would compensate you 25 dollars per day, if your baggage is still delayed for the next 4 days.

Damaged baggage

Delta really strives hard to make sure every piece of luggage would be intact during a domestic or international flight. However, sometimes your baggage might still be damaged because of mishandling. Delta has baggage offices at most airports, so once you find that your baggage has been damaged during transportation, you can turn to these offices immediately after your arrival.

Remember that, Delta requires that passengers should get their damaged baggage previewed and evaluated by personnel in the baggage service office before they claim the damage. If the damaged is truly caused by Delta, the airline would help you repair your baggage. According to Delta's policy, claim for damaged baggage should be reported within 24 hours of your domestic travel. For international travelers, it is necessary to report damage within seven days of the travel. Otherwise, Delta would not accept your claim.

Lost baggage

If you just find your baggage is missing when you arrive at your destination, report your property as soon as possible. You can contact a Delta's representative at 1-800-325-8224 or 1-404-209-3043. Delta would do its best to return your baggage. However, if your baggage has been lost during transit, Delta would take responsibility for that, and you will receive a certain amount of compensation.

Just keep in mind that, if you have lost your checked baggage or several items from a checked bag, you will need to fill in a Damage/Missing Property Claim Form and submit it within 30 days of the lost. For missing items from unchecked bags, Delta would ask you to submit a Lost Items Form within seven days of the occurrence.
